Summer finally made its presence known in the Midwest. It’s HOT! That means I’m in full-gear making crisp, summer salads and smoothies to keep cool.
The melons this year have been super sweet. Now I like my fruit smoothies on the almost-too-sickeningly-sweet side, but even I had to put the brakes on this time. I tamed this by adding a bit of lemon juice which made it perfectly sweet-tart.
I added in hemp seeds, which you can’t taste, but which give some body and a nice little nutritional boost to this smoothie with omega-3, fiber, and 10 grams of protein. Enjoy this for breakfast or dessert!
For those following Dr. Fuhrman’s Eat To Live program, this complies with both the weight loss and life plan.
Ingredients (makes 1 large smoothie)
1 banana – sliced
1 cup cubed watermelon
1 cup cubed casaba or honeydew melon
1 cup raspberries
1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond or soy milk
¼ cup fresh lemon or lime juice
3 tablespoons hemp seeds
Directions
1. Place all ingredients in a large-capacity blender, or divide ingredients into 2 batches. Blend on high speed for 60 seconds.
2. Serve chilled. This makes a large smoothie, so store any extra in the fridge in a tightly sealed container for 1 – 2 days.
