For better or worse, we’re adults now. There are things we can no longer get away with, like skipping down the aisle of the grocery store (lest we invite a raised eyebrow or two). Or adding sugar to your already heavily-sugared cereal – yes, I added sugar to Lucky Charms, Quisp (do they still sell that??) and Captain Crunch as a child. You can gasp now!
I used to have chocolate milk every day in high school with my lunch. Why? I have no idea – probably just because it was there, and I knew my parents wouldn’t approve, but they weren’t there to see me, so I felt like I was getting away with something. Woo – chocolate milk – yeah, I was a real rebel!
I haven’t had chocolate milk since. Smoothies, yes. Milk, no. And why is that? Is there really a difference between milk, a smoothie and a shake other than thickness? I guess the sugar content has something to do with it. And since the very “adult” me shuns sugar, I need to find other ways to satisfy my occasional sweet tooth.
Solution? Really ripe bananas! And strawberries! Add a heaping tablespoon of cocoa powder, some vanilla soy milk (unsweetened), coconut water and you have a nice, healthy, adult version of chocolate milk.
A word of caution – if you’re sensitive to caffeine like me, you might not want to have this after lunch time. The caffeine in the cocoa powder keeps me up all night!
Ingredients (serves 2)
1 ripe banana
1 cup strawberries (fresh or frozen)
1 cup unsweetened vanilla soy (or almond) milk
1 cup coconut water
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
garnish with caco nibs (optional)
Directions
Place all ingredients (except caco nibs) in a blender and mix until completely smooth. Serve chilled and garnished with caco nibs.
