Condiments are awesome at making things taste….well, awesome. But they can contain a boat load of bad stuff like excessive amounts of salt, sugar, food coloring and preservatives.
I like to make my own condiments to not only leave out the bad stuff, but to tweak the taste to my liking. And it’s so fast and simple to make. This ketchup is a cross between traditional ketchup and barbecue sauce without being too sweet. Since the base of this recipe is tomato paste, make sure you buy a really good tasting one. Believe me, some are far better than others. (I used the Trader Joe brand – not a paid endorsement!)
I made this ketchup to go with the recipe I’m planning for tomorrow, so check back to see what I plan to slather this ketchup all over!
Ingredients (makes about 1/2 cup)
6-ounce can of tomato paste
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
2 teaspoons honey or agave nectar
2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 – 1 teaspoon hot smoked paprika (make as spicy hot as you like)
1/2 – 1 teaspoon salt to taste
Directions
- Mix all ingredients together in a mixing bowl.
- Transfer to a storage container and refrigerate overnight to let the flavors meld.
- This will last in the fridge, tightly sealed, for about 2 weeks. You can also freeze it.
