As I was carefully selecting my melon at the market, I overhead a kid say to his mom, “I hate cantaloupe!” The first thing I thought was, “What’s wrong with that kid?” The second thing I thought was, “What’s wrong with the mother for not properly introducing her child to the wonderful deliciousness that is cantaloupe?”
Then my rational self reminded my judgmental self that I didn’t like cantaloupe as a child, either. I always liked watermelon and honeydew and casaba and almost every other kind of melon, but I had something against cantaloupe but I couldn’t remember why.
Then it dawned on me that when I was a kid, my mom was on Weight Watchers and one of the things they could have for breakfast or lunch was a cantaloupe cut in half with a scoop of low-fat cottage cheese in the center. So I connected cantaloupe with “diet food” – and what self-respecting kid would be caught dead eating diet food! Eventually, my mom convinced me to try cantaloupe, and years later when I was off to college, I sat in my dorm room eating half a cantaloupe with a scoop of full-fat cottage cheese in the center. Thanks, Mom.
